BLOG two

Weeks three and four of VCD102 for task 1 involved further understanding of the tools of Illustrator and developing our skills abroad on the software that I can integrate into my own poster to make it as visually appealing to the viewer as possible. Both weeks three and four much like the first two weeks of VCD102 was involved with the exploratory phase of the design process for the overall task as we began prototyping for the task.

These two weeks had a main focus around the typography, functional layouts, drawing and manipulation of shapes and colour schemes itself from adobe colour. We explored ways to create graphs created into more visually appealing views for the audience through 3d effects and colour manipulations. This also led us to learning ways that we can represent data sets but without the use of graphs. This was the use of shapes in order to create and manipulate into an icon such as people or houses for example which help to represent a population.

Week 4 was pivotal in learning poster layouts and various settings to do so.

This was best shown in the tutorials where we were given an already constructed document in Illustrator and making graphs out of datas on them as well a manipulating various  shapes or type into something unique. After the commencement of week 4 tutorial I was able to go away now and create my own poster with trial an error with colour schemes and typography as well as manipulating shapes and constructing graphs out of my own data gathered on Terrorism found in weeks 1 and 2. The data gathered giving me thorough statistics on issues such as where in the world terrorist attacks occur the most. The rate of fatalities in the world and who on most commonly as well as the most common ways in which this awful attacks occur the most.

The final design I have decided i will go with will be titled “Terrorism” with various icons around the title such as a jetplane. Through learning about text border manipulation I was able to put the text at a slant of about 25 degrees to create effect and less simplicity. I will then flow down the page with a world map to give the viewer a geographical reference to where abouts in particular my poster is taking the viewers understanding with facts written into it. This being a geographical graph, this being one of the primary features of the poster. I then will flow down into a pie graph along side a column graph which will include numerous shape built characters to represent population. Then finally to section off the bottom half of the poster I will have a red bandana type bar that will include statistics on terrorist organisations around the world that are most threatening as well as a final feature on the bottom that has type statistics and icon representation. This being a number in bold and big to draw the viewers gaze to and be able to understand the data straight away.

I hope that this poster will turn out as planned so that I can represent my statistics in a visually appealing way for the audience without having heavy verbal statistics all over the poster making it a boring and disengaging read.

DEFINING (week 9)

The proceeding of week 6 saw us see the commencement of our VCD Task 2 major project. This was a response to the design brief, designing and prototyping an interactive response to the brief, this being an Adobe XD website, game interface, interactive way finding system or app design. For this I decided that I would create a music festival for a certain genre of music in which I go further in depth to.

To begin the project proposal phase of the design I had to define what I was to do. For something so broad a mind-map was perfect for this. Funnelling down the essential details such as what genre of music festival I would do, location in which I would hold the event, who would attend the event (artist). As my original mind-map created in class was destroyed due to water damage from rain I had to re-create one online. I had to brainstormScreen Shot 2019-09-24 at 5.38.20 pm.png all possibilities that would need to be considered into the entirety of the music festival. I had to make sure that I considered things that would play mass factors into the festival such as the listed venue, time and date and names for example. As well as looking out the goers of the festival by considering the transport to and from the event.

MOOD BOARD –

Screen Shot 2019-09-24 at 5.53.19 pm.png

Next was to create a mood board, this is a gathering of competitive sets of ideas that I found similar to those of current music festival websites and ideas for the rap culture already. This means finding similarities that I find visually appealing from these music festival websites. I included icons in which I will include into my own personal rap poster such as the Sydney harbour scape as this will resemble to the viewer  the location straight away due to the recognition of Sydney Harbour. I have included pictures of music festivals today that are current and throughout the season of summer to express the relaxation and chilled vibe of a summer festival. Everyone coming together and enjoying the same music, along with icons that resemble summer to a viewer. The colour palette in which I have included in my mood board will be what I use for the websites identity and I will be sticking with this.

Goals in which I wish to exceed for this site is to be an easily navigable website for the user that includes cool visuals throughout the site. I will base my site roughly from the similarities to the Rolling Loud posters. I want my site to have lots of visual cartoon icons, things such as a Lamborghini driving into the sunset with a city scape depicted in the background followed by the artist lineup for the event. Simplicity is always key with things such as a website so I am happy to work beyond a basic poster of work. I want the users experience to not only be easy but also real them in. Creating an appealing site is key to keeping the viewers attention at all times. I plan to include interactive icons so when a user clicks on something such as the Lamborghini icon, the car will drive forward and then it will take you to another page with the artist lineup. The colour scheme I have chosen is the one attached in the mood board, a black/grey to purpley colour. I chose this as it is a nostalgic colour scheme that is not too in the face of the viewer when they are in it. I have decided to use the “flood std”    as it is a grungy-hard rap typeface which I feel as though perfectly suits the music festival hip hop theme. The motif I am going to follow will be a theme of Rolling Loud. This in the words of its creator Tariq Cherif “Rolling Loud is an experience for all in which the billboards and websites created are intended for all viewers to easily read but be drawn in at the same time. The theme of Rolling Loud is hip-hop which is a cool hype vibe theme”. I too want to follow along this hype vibe on my website by creating pop art icons that grab the viewers attention.

Contextual Essay

For my BCM114 digital artefact I teamed up with Ricardo Rodrigues in creating a joint YouTube channel of day in the life type videos on hobbies that we like doing. This in particular is surfing, exploring the local areas and hidden secrets of Wollongong as well as filming in general. How we intended on doing this was creating a YouTube channel and coming up with a creative name that linked the two of us followed by an Instagram account as another platform of exposure and filming our videos via my Nikon D5200 and GoPro Hero for those underwater shots. I developed this project because I wanted to make a YouTube series about a day in the life and short films that Ricardo and I have made in the Wollongong area. I gained my inspiration from research on YouTubers that I follow currently and have so for years now these are the likes of Alex Hayes (@Alex Hayes), Jamie O’brien (@whoisjob) and Tyler Hanley (@TylerHanley) all in which share this common conent of day in the lives. We decided to make this YouTube too as it has a heavy viewer rate which shows interest in the field as well as it is my personal interest in this. We made this starter pack to give an audience a basic what to know and what a typical audience is like! I will develop this project by creating ideas, filming on my Nikon D5200 and GoPro Hero with Ricardo on various things around Wollongong and editing clips through Adobe’s editing software.

The processes and tools in which Ricardo and I used and took to come up with our film clips were in all quite time consuming to say the least. We found that we relied heavily on weather predictions and outcomes of days as this determined whether we would be filming for the day which kind of set us back a bit in our production time and then for utilities we struggled immensely especially for the first video we released as we both were getting to know the Adobe software, Premiere pro and After Effects which mean’t we had to watch tutorials slowing down the process a lot. From what happened after this first video got complete being the surfing video leading into a concert of Hayden James was our second video to RAQFILM. This being a recent upload I filmed and edited of a wedding function. I was paid for this event so I decided that this would work perfectly in accordance with the DA as its my job so its like a day in the life of myself really plus I really liked how the video turned out and I thought it would be perfect to add to the overall DA content.

The responses that we gathered over the DA was structural feedback on where we can improve for further videos as well as positive feedback on viewer satisfaction. From the first video I we gathered feedback from both friends and family of ours who gave us both these forms of feedback described. We gained feedback such as “I think the video is really good but I feel like you should have split the videos into two different videos rather then one big video as it kind of makes it feel like two videos mashed together anyway” as well as “the video is so good! Its edited well!”, “OMG that’s wonderful well done” and finally “OMG its so nice”. We publicised all our videos on both the RAQFILM accounts as well as our personal accounts in which got comments on also from friends on Instagram.

Screen Shot 2019-11-01 at 4.37.12 pm.png

We gained all up a decent following from our time doing the DA gathering 62 Instagram followers strarting from 0 and an average of around 14 likes a post and gaining around 100 views per video posted. For our YouTube account we gathered 13 subscribers and gained our most views on our first video with 141 and our second one lacked time exposure as it was freshly posted. Our videos ended up taking more time then we both expected to make as stated earlier due to the weather issues we had to work around as well as editing on Premiere Pro and After Effects which took about 7 hrs per video to create.

From my experience with my social utility working with YouTube and Instagram have been both easy to use and interesting to learn. I had never used YouTube prior to this assignment and found it an enjoyable experience. I learn’t how to upload to YouTube and finding out all the analysis feedback in which YouTube has similar to Instagram.

OP3

As we conclude the creating of the Digital Artefact we must reflect on how far it has come from the original pitch idea stipulating where we wanted our DA to go. The pitch in which Ricardo and I put out in accordance to our Digital Artefact was to create a YouTube and Instagram account that we both ran that would include day in the life type videos. This would include surfing and other various things around the Wollongong region.

IMG_2386.jpg

After the project pitch was completed, this being the ideating phase of our Digital Artefact we had to also come up with a creative name to follow with our creative idea. Joining both similarities of Ricardo and I’s name to represent the two to come up with RAQFILM. This involved brainstorming techniques and feedback opinions from peers, all part of ideating of an idea. To ensure our idea of the Digital Artefact is one that will follow with success a creator must analyse the audience as well as the field being presented to.

Next stage was the prototyping stage of the digital artefact. We explored the prototyping of a digital artefact throughout the lectures, commencing in week 6 being a tangiable physical model of the idea. This was for us hitting the prototyping target of the “feedback loop”. By doing so we started by creating short snippet videos that previewed or first idea on our Instagram account, much like a taster. This “feedback loop” in which we learnt in the module provides us with understanding and improving upon when showed to people as well as the viewer engagement with the snippet. Then we released the first video live. From this point our prototype becomes a continuous loop of defining, ideating, prototyping, testing and observing.

Now after creating our first prototype we went on to the ‘making’ phase of project. This was through week 8 in which we learn’t is simply the creation of the idea whether it be arts and crafts, a digital project such as editing and software etc. This making stage for both Ricardo and myself was filming our clips and finally editing and putting together films on Adobe Premiere Pro. These being fundamental tools in creating a YouTube video. Through research we were able to learn various editing effects through YouTube tutorials as well as viewer feedback on improvements. Once we released our video live to YouTube I gathered around a physical audience to view the video for themselves in which we gained some constructive feedback for Digital Artefact which is essential for improvements and consideration.

Overall the entire process of the digital artefact has proven that our original idea has been met at the end of the entire assessment which Ricardo and myself are pleased about. The only issue in which we had with the DA was that we weren’t able to release as many videos as previously hoped for ending with 2 videos. This was both due to lack of skills in editing as well as weather issues that we had to work around as we could not film through the rain etc.

DESIGN PROCESS

The design process stage of the project major work is to come up with an overall design of your logo and website and link it back to the fundamental idea of semiotics and its science of signs. As well as gathering key icons, symbols and indexes and realising how they can come into play with your own design. The design process is an overall analysis and at this stage becomes an evaluation of how I personally got to where I am in the project and how I got there, making me question things I could’ve done better and/or changed to make my entire process better.

Initially I gathered my thoughts and ideas for a logo from the internet as well as using semiotics to brainstorm some ways that I can use a symbol or sign to signify something to the reader, the fundamentals of the science of signs. After our lecture in week 5 and from learning about it previous semester in another subject my understanding of semiotics was thorough. I realised that if I want to perceive something in my logo without having to write it I would have to use the idea of semiotics to make this work. Of course in my logo only people with good geographic knowledge would be able to recognise the location of my festival as it is an icon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This enabled me to display the location within the logo without having to write it making it seem un-formal. I also used the science of semiotics in my middle icon being a microphone which is a symbol of the idea of what the festival type is… music.

The process of the design process was that of lots of brainstorming and researching ideas that are out there now in regards to hip hop music festivals and festivals in general. From this I narrowed down to four main music festivals that I used to gather ideas for my own logo, Listen Out, Groovin the Moo, Rolling Loud and Field Day. I then made sketches of ideas that came to mind once viewing these festivals. I then decided I would buy a sketch book from the Unishop on campus at Wollongong to keep all my ideas in one place. I began drawing up 9 logo ideas that are all related to genre of hip hop and rap as well as would incorporate the symbol of Sydney in it as well, obviously meaning I would need a city scape. I did some iterations and duplications with other designs I came up with to give my this final design concept.

Next I constructed my website layout as I wanted to have an idea of how I was going to present all my pages of the website into a visual form that I could edit and come back to without properly starting and making effective changes. I too researched various music festivals around the world that all have a website to go with their festival and analysed their layouts theyve chosen as well as how each animation or click works and where it takes you. I noted key headings that I would need to include in my website being a splash page, lineup page, info page and contact page. All in which take you to various pages within pages of that. I did this by sketching all my various ideas for each page down onto my sketch notebook and making any noteable changes I thought could be removed or added as well as visual effects that work well for the website. Attached is the images of this.

REFINING (WEEK 13)

The refining phase of the project is where I myself are to re-visit my rationale I wrote up for myself throughout week 6 when discovering my idea and what I would do and tweek my website in any way that is required to make it fit the rationale as well as identifying any usability issues in which I found has occurred in making my website with the interface and interactions etc.

I found myself very behind in the creating of the website phase of the project as I was still finalising my logo design on Adobe Illustrator so it would be ready to be put straight onto my splash page of the Adobe XD file that I had created ready. So I began the real work on the website in week 13. Straight away I found some issue that arose with the interactions with the website. My logo in which I had created on Illustrator cam out on the splash page extremely gapy, meaning there was all these white spaces between my brush strokes on any of the icons that I drew so it made the entire logo unreadable for the viewer. With panic and assistance from my teacher she quickly found a solution to make the illustrator logo blank out those spots on the website splash page by gowing through a process of click line stroke > select > same > fill colour > window > pathfinder > shape mode (unite). Then when I made my first auto-animate I found two issues where Illustrator had picked up these small pixel like pieces and attached them to the moving microphone piece I wanted to animate. To resolve I double clicked the pieces and deleted them but this process was very tedious as it would always highlight the entire image meaning I would accidentally delete the whole logo by accident and then have to command+Z it. I also found that the animation timing was a trial an error because originally at 2s was very slow and seamed as though it took way to long to animate so with a few attempts of seeing what was perfect I found 0.2s from display was perfect and would make the logo pulsate at you when you are on the splash page enticing you to click the logo which takes you further into the website.

What I feel I did well is the logo and the final product of it. It turned out well and I like the look of it as it includes the location of the event within it, the genre of the festival straight of view as well as the season that the festival is held in with the blazing sun in the background perceiving a sense of heat and hot. The final product although I really like I feel as though could have been done better with the pen tool perhaps as I used the paintbrush tool and on Illustrator makes it turn out really well! but on the Adobe XD kind of looks childish and simple. I also should have started the design process a lot earlier as I didn’t expect it to set me back this much so I do wish I had started earlier. I am happy with it as it was extremely time consuming and tedious setting me back on production phase but with hard work from now until week 15 I can see my website turning out exactly how I wish so.

Prototype (week 11)

The prototyping stage of the major work consisted of various sketches and illustration concepts of designs for our way of thinking of our website logos and website layout. I purchased a small notebook for this stage of the project as i could draw out my initial sketch ideas and duplication that I came up with of the sketches and then put them into an illustrator page and make further duplications and iterations to the design whilst also bringing it to life at the same time. This idea of the notebook also worked well when drawing out my website layout as I had all the layouts in order and in the one place so I did not lose them.

The goals in which I stated in my rationale in which was to create a music festival specifically hip hop… in the Sydney region of Australia for patrons over the age of 18 whom all share a great interest in hip hop music today. I also outlined my intent to follow along the roughly similar scheme of Rolling Loud and Listen Out in creating a visually appealing website and more importantly make a statement with the logo and splash page of my website, something that the viewer will be drawn into and remember due to its colour explosion, details included and the way in which its laid out.  The prototype in which I created is more of a two part, the initials that you find is a city scape with a car driving into it on a road with a plane in the sky, Sydney harbour bridge in the background and the sun too but in the middle you too see a microphone image with Hip Hop written inside which is what I mean by the second part of the logo as that branches off seperatly throughout the website, purely because I could not have this huge image on every page everytime so making it into a segment worked best creating a sense of two parts.

Screen Shot 2019-10-30 at 12.50.32 pm.pngThis concept meets my desired look as it is very colourful and draws the viewer into so many different aspects and parts of the image with its various symbols throughout. The logo without needing to be written conveys to the viewer where the location is with Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background and the city scape in the foreground as well as the idea of the season in which it is held, summer. With the sun in the background blazing heat. The overall logo of the microphone tells any viewer that the festival is that of a hip hop genre due to its name of the festival and it being written in the centre. The words Hip Hop worked perfectly with the microphone idea as they moulded perfectly around the microphone shape i.e. the microphone handle to resemble a hand in a way?

I gathered feedback from peers in two ways. The first way was the exposure of the logo design to the class as my teacher showed the class what I had done. This was both for an instructional tutorial on how to use Adobe Capture as well as becoming beneficial for me as I gained verbal feedback from my peers when they commented on the picture saying, “wow that really cool!” and “oh you drew that yourself ?”. I also gathered feedback from another peer when I showed them my concepts (9 various ones) and asked their favourite and then revealed my chosen final idea. This feedback was good as the one in which my peer selected and commented… “I like this one the most as it relates to the genre as well as this one as it shows the location within the logo”. This made me brainstorm and realise that I could mould two of my designs together to make the ideal logo as well as fitting the rationale I intended.

Online Presence 2

As we arrive to week 10 of semester 2 for BCM114 it is important for ourselves to take a step back and reflect on how far we have come with the Digital Artefact and also whether or not we have in fact moved away from the initial pitch idea or whether we have successfully stuck to what we planned to do. For me and Ricardo Rodrigues who I am creating a joint YouTube channel and Instagram with we have both successfully done so in staying on track with our pitch idea… “to create a day in the life YouTube and Instagram accounts on surfing, concerts etc”. This account being called RAQFILM.

Screen Shot 2019-10-10 at 5.10.06 pm.pngThe feedback loop in which we learn’t about throughout week 6 is key for the digital artefact as it allows us to understand improvement that we can take away from feedback. This is a continuous loop of defining, ideating, prototyping, testing and finally observing. Prototyping in which had to be undertaken through this stage of the digital artefact is simply a tangible physical model of what was discussed in the ideate stage. This being our first video in which is live and can be found on our RAQFILM YouTube channel. This prototype being key in gaining feedback in improvements that can be undertaken further into the development of the DA.From the initial day one of the digital artefact, which began after the pitch for us both we started filming surfing clips at the local beaches to Wollongong (North Gong, City beach and Bellambi). During the filming stage we decided that we needed something to spice up the YouTube video, something that would make the video turn into a more day in the life so coincidentally we had a Hayden James concert we were both going to, therefore made a perfect addition to the video. Once we started filming we had an issue of disagreement between myself and Ricardo, he wanting to join the two videos into one and for me I wanted to have them as two seperate videos. This mean’t we had to do some ideating and brainstorming on what option would work best in which we agreed that we would join them together.

IMG_2803.PNG

The next phase is making in which we explored in the week of 8 in the lectures and tutorials. This depending on what your digital artefact is on is simply the creation of your idea. This can be through arts and crafts, editing software etc. This stage for Ricardo and I is the editing of videos as we bring together each individual clip to form one video with effects throughout it as well as electronically making branding for our DA. To make, we used Premiere Pro as well as Illustrator. These all being fundamental tools in making content for our YouTube and Instagram account. Along with making is sharing, this being sharing our video to multiple platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, as described one of the best ways to grow your channel.

Feedback received from Lillie Paton “I think you should have split the concert and surfing videos up as it kind of feels out of place from the video and the transition between the two does not fit well but other then that its really good!”.

BCM 114 PROJECT BETA

For myself and Ricardo we intended to create a joint Digital Artefact that was both engaging and entertaining. This was a YouTube and Instagram account that we would both run of videos of a “day in the life” type videos. Content that we created of our everyday lives. Mainly the inclusion of ourselves surfing, going to concerts and visiting local coffee shops and attractions around the Wollongong area. Gathering material ideas from various YouTubers and Instagram sensations such as Alex Hayes, Jamie O’Brien and Tyler Hanley.

With roughly 3 weeks passed of the commencement of our DA we have successfully stuck on track with what we pitched to you. This being a joint YouTube and Instagram of a “day in the life”. Although we have stuck on track with our project pitch we have found many difficulties and hick ups along the way so far. Things that have not only hindered our uploading amounts but also come in beneficially with feedback and learning curves. With our idea we mostly require a decently sunny days and warm temperatures as our content is predominately outside in the water. As it is still Spring we have been unfortunate with how the weather has affected filming opportunities with it either being rainy or the swell at the beach being too small. We also had difficulties in the editing software that we used, Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects. They would struggle to open up when we needed it to or would crash often which mean’t progress was slow and frustration was high!. We have although figured out the issue through thorough YouTubing tutorials of “how to fix a crashing Premiere Pro”. With feedback from viewers we showed once uploading our YouTube video we gathered valuable knowledge that between videos we could use better transitioning and fading out and potentially splitting the video we created into two parts. As Ricardo edited the surfing edit and I edited the Hayden James edit it could have worked better as two differing videos.

We are both happy with how our project is coming along and are releasing our next video soon! Editing underway…

Satya Bollywood (1998)

The film in which begins in the underworlds of Mumbai, India following a series of events. When Satya, the main protagonist of the film finds himself caught up in an ugly dispute with local thugs from the underworld community in Mumbai, creating a chain reaction of events of brawls which unfairly result in the lock up in jail of Satya. This is where we meet the character Viku leader of the mafia gang in which the two form a strong bond together. Once released Satya finds himself in the deep world of crime with Viku. With Satya’s intelligence and bravery it creates rapid growth for the groups mafia business.

The character of Satya (performed by JD Chakrabarti) is the main character of the film in which the movie revolve around. He is percieved as non-talkative, intelligent and always willing to fight for his self-esteem which finds himself to form this strong bond with his fellow co-star Viku.

The film was created and set in the non glamorised areas of Mumbai in India. A bollywood created film that made it big across India. Upon the pre-release the film was not expected to carry very far and expected to be underwhelming but prior to the release took the film industry by storm creating huge conversation on how well it was actually created. Exploring the underworld of the not so much seen lively-hood of the Mafia in India. The intended audience for this film are those viewers in India and surrounding areas of Asia. The film engrosses relate-able content of environments of India and culture of Hinduism. When watching this movie a foreign audience to the lifestyle of India will find themselves to have to make sense of the cultural knowledge of India, this being Hinduism as well as the knowledge of the underground world of Mumbai, this being the gang affiliation of the Mafia and what their intended business work is. This will allow the audience to understand how the movie is set and what Satya is involving himself in.

The film relates to this idea of cultural homogenisation/hybridisation: cultural proximity; the global north and south divide through its integration with the Indian society of today. The parts of India that are not always exposed to by everyone but for the audience they can relate to the current issue of the story line and culture surrounding it. The film holds a cultural homogenisation in its way of not creating a “rich” livelihood perception and rather an underworld/slums of Mumbai setting. The film shows cultural proximity across all cultures in its relation to the idea of the gang Mafia which are seen all round the world especially across European countries. It explores the work of such a world renowned gang business to inter-relate all viewers as well as at the same time creating cultural hybridisation, pulling away from the so heavily impacted western influence through its settings environment, a non often seen Mumbai. Moving away from the common western idea of gang businesses such as black gangster groups such as Crips or Bloods gangs and more towards an issue of crime that is actually seen upon in the streets of Mumbai.

I found the film really interesting in its way of exploring this rarely seen underworld of India and intertwining the culture of Hinduism to the viewer. It creates a sense of foreignness but intriguing attitude to a viewer such as myself who is so heavily bombarded with this de-cultural homogenisation of cultures outside of the western world. Branching out in a globalised mindset and watching a bollywood movie was enjoyable and in a way educative.
